How to Send Money Internationally: A Step-by-Step Guide

A practical international money transfer checklist, from choosing how the recipient gets paid to comparing the final quote and tracking the transfer.

Published

Sending money internationally is easier to compare when you define the transfer before you choose a company. The destination is only one part of the question. How you fund the transfer, how the recipient receives it, and the exact amount can all change the quote or the options shown.

This guide gives you a reusable process. It does not assume that one provider, payment method, or delivery method works everywhere.

Start with the transfer you need to make

Write down the practical requirements first:

  • where the money is going;
  • which currency the recipient needs;
  • how much you want to send or the recipient to receive;
  • how you want to pay;
  • how the recipient wants to get the money; and
  • whether either person has a deadline or an account requirement.

These details make provider comparisons more useful. A bank deposit and a cash pickup are different products even when the destination and send amount are the same. If the delivery choice is still open, read our guide to cash pickup versus bank deposit.

Choose the delivery method before comparing prices

Ask the recipient what is practical for them. A bank deposit may require precise account details. Cash pickup may require travel to an eligible location and acceptable identification. A mobile-wallet payout depends on a supported wallet and route.

Do not treat a provider’s general list of services as confirmation for your transfer. Use our delivery-method finder to highlight providers to check, then confirm the route in each provider’s current quote flow.

Gather the recipient information carefully

The required fields vary by destination, currency, delivery method, provider, and sometimes the purpose of the payment. You may be asked for the recipient’s name and contact information, bank or wallet details, pickup location, or other transfer-specific information.

Get the details directly from the recipient and check them before submitting. A small error in a name or account identifier can lead to delay, rejection, or money being sent to the wrong place. Our international transfer checklist organizes the questions to answer before opening a quote.

Compare like-for-like current quotes

Open more than one provider quote using the same inputs. Keep the amount, currencies, funding method, and delivery method aligned. Then compare the complete result:

  • the amount you pay;
  • the displayed transfer fees or taxes;
  • the exchange rate used;
  • the amount expected to reach the recipient;
  • the estimated availability or arrival time; and
  • any conditions shown before confirmation.

A headline fee does not describe the whole transfer. The fees and exchange rates guide explains why the expected recipient amount is an important common checkpoint. The CFPB consumer material in this page’s source record also shows why the full disclosure is more useful than a single advertised figure.

Review the final screen before paying

Read the recipient details, funding source, delivery method, currency, total payment, expected recipient amount, and timing estimate again. Save the confirmation or receipt in a secure place and make sure you know how the provider will send status updates.

The provider may ask for identity or other information during the process. A general guide cannot predict which checks apply to you, so follow the provider’s current instructions and stop if the details do not match the transfer you intended.

Track the transfer and share useful details

Use the provider’s official app, website, email, or receipt to follow progress. Share only the information the recipient needs, such as a legitimate pickup reference or an expected arrival notice. Avoid sending passwords, full payment-card details, or account login credentials.

If the estimate passes, check the status before starting a second transfer. Confirm the recipient details, look for a provider request for more information, and use the provider’s official support channel. Our guide to international transfer timing explains the stages that can affect an estimate.

A short international transfer checklist

Before you pay, confirm that:

  • the quote matches the intended destination and receiving currency;
  • the selected delivery method works for the recipient;
  • every quote uses comparable transfer inputs;
  • the final recipient amount and total sender payment are clear;
  • the timing shown fits the recipient’s needs without treating it as a guarantee; and
  • the recipient details have been checked against a reliable source.

Once those points are settled, compare the providers that fit the transfer and let their current quote tools confirm the details that can change.
